The 2011 Camaro SS Convertible to Pace the
100th Anniversary Indianapolis 500 !

500 Total Replicas to be produced.

Saturday January 22, 2011

Well fans, for the third year in a row, it's not a Corvette, but the new Camaro convertible is striking in it's 1969 inspired paint scheme.

Chevrolet says a special edition of its new Camaro convertible will be the official pace car of the 2011 Indianapolis 500. The car will be the 22nd Chevy to lead the field to the start of the classic race and the seventh Camaro to do so.

Officials from Chevrolet and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway made the announcement during the Barrett-Jackson classic-car auction in Scottsdale, Ariz. As part of the auction bidders will get the chance to vie for the first of 50 Indianapolis 500 Festival Committee cars, which are pace-car replicas. The special-edition cars mark the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 and Chevrolet’s centennial year.

The pace car and replicas are painted white with orange stripes and door graphics. The interior is trimmed in orange leather and the front- seat headrests are embossed with the Indy 500 logo. The instrument panel trim even features extensions of the orange exterior stripes that continue from the hood onto part of the dashboard. The color combination is similar to the design used on the 1969 Camaro pace car. Replicas of the ‘69 are now coveted by collectors.

The auction for the commemorative edition pace car took place Saturday evening, Jan. 22, during the Speed channel’s live coverage of the auction and the car sold for a whopping $225,000 with proceeds benefitting The David Foster Foundation!

But there were more "perks" for the winning bidder !

What perks? The winning bidder gets to take a lap around the track driving his or her new prize on the first parade lap prior to the race and will take delivery that day. He will also receive a VIP race package, and a 3-day Bob Bondurant driving school package.

A special-edition 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Indianapolis 500 model will arrive in showrooms priced at $47,000 this spring, Chevrolet announced at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show. Pricing includes an $850 destination charge.

The replica — a Camaro SS Convertible in white with orange stripes and orange leather-trimmed interior — celebrates the 100th anniversary of Chevy this year. A special-edition Camaro Convertible will be the official pace car of the 2011 Indianapolis 500.

The color combination on the pace car replica evokes the design used on the 1969 Camaro Indy pace car. Chevrolet said in a statement that those cars are "among the most popular Camaros in the collector world."

The Indy Pace car convertibles will be equipped with the 6.2-liter V8 engine and the choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.
