What
is an Indianapolis 500 Festival Car???
Whether
called a Festival Car, Track Car, or Parade Car, these Corvettes
were used as "official support vehicles" for one
of the Indianapolis 500 races during the month of May. These
are in addition to the few cars that were actually used during
the race to pace it.
During
1978, 1986, 1995, and 1998, Chevrolet actually produced "replicas"
of the Indy pace cars for sale to the public, and a number
of these were redirected to Indy for this honor.
For
the 2003 race, Chevrolet used this opportunity as a way to
preview the new 50th Anniversary 2003 Corvette. A few early
2003 coupes were used as the pace vehicles, and at a later
date, Chevrolet offered a limited number of replica body graphics
for sale that owners of the 2003 "50th Anniversary"
Corvettes could add to their vehicles. To supplement support
duties this year, a number of "standard" 2002 Corvettes
were used that had some graphics added to them.
On
several other years, Chevrolet provided Corvettes as support
vehicles for other pace cars, such as during 1990, when a
Chevy Beretta paced the race.
There
were also several years where "Dealer Drive-Away program"
Corvettes were made available to the track.
Once
the race is over, all of these "Festival" vehicles
are sold thru specific dealers to the public.
